How do you control your stress/anxiety, other than medication?

Prayer first. I do take medication, but walking and some kind of activity outside can be helpful; especially walking. I feel for you, no one understands until it happens to them.

Laughter. Try to find something funny and laugh at it.. even if it's your own self.. I used to conger up the Abbott and Costello "Who's on First" routine and would go thru that.. I don't have hardly any Stress and Anxiety now that I've had back surgery and no longer lose control of my hands and feet.. (it was scary)
now the only thing scary in my life is watching obama lie and watching all the sheeple eat it up..

Exercise does help. It's just getting the engery/mood to go and do it. I know it's not that easy to just go and do. I also have a good friend I can go to and talk to.

stressed spelled backwards is DESSERTS... Whenever I get stressed a good cry helps me...at least most of the times.

I hope this is just anxiety (or indigestion) I'm having. Chest has been hurting. Started yesterday evening. Stress and anxiety suck big time!

I'm sorry you're going through that, easy. It's horrible, I know first hand. I don't get the stress in my chest though, just tightening sometimes. Try to take it easy....easy lol

More women than men have heart disease. Symptoms can last a few days, not all symptons are the same for everyone.... Better be safe than sorry, please get someone to take you.

Thanks guys. It has subsided (for now). I'm under a lot of stress at work and there is one coworker who is causing 75% of it.

Suggestion from Doctor Dirty: may I recommend strangulation? not only will it relieve stress, it's a very good cardiovascular exercise and helps to build up the upper torso... (be sure and maintain the proper erect posture when shaking victim to and fro, you don't want a sore back too)

SRV, I went a month ago and got some pills to take only when I am having anxiety. I am not good at taking regular medications so you can basically call this a chill pill and I take it only when I need it. It helps. I have found too that the feeling of anxiety sometimes comes on the day after I have indulged in some alcoholic beverages so I have really slowed on that.

My daughter is having some major stress problems. Her husband and her have separated (hopefully just a trial separation) and has been going to the doctor for the beginnings of cervical cancer. She says she has had some anxiety attacks too. She has talked with someone when they first separated and that seemed to help. Sometimes I don't know how to help her but just listen. I also take my granddaughter when I can. At 19 months she is a handful.

LOL-I like your suggestion DD. I wish I could. I was doing some research online about annoying/stressful coworkers. I printed out some of the tips on dealing w/them and put them by my desk. Rabalais-I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she has caught the cervical cancer soon enough to treat it and it totally goes away for her. Also, I hope she and her husband can work things out. I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

easydoesit, I can relate. When I parted with the dishonest, backstabber, lier, unethical, slime ball company owner and changed jobs.... My blood pressure went down, muscle cramps eased and everyone tells me I look sooo much better. Why do we let ourselves get stuck in jobs that are in reality killing us? Never mind I know the answer. We do what we gotta do. Wish you luck though.

itchy, is that the same as a panic attack? I suffer from those...and usually it happens when I'm driving. The first few times I got one I thought I was having a heart attack and almost had to pull over.

I have started taking Lexapro 20 mg every other day, to save on cost and hopefully get a better boost. I didn't ask my doc, but I will tell him next time I go in. Anybody do this? Seems to be working!

About four months ago I had to go into the doc. It wasn't something I wanted to do either. I had a coworker that was really giving me hell for over a year and a boss that wouldn't do anything about it. Then the day came after a month of symptoms that had me thinking I was having a heart attack. It was like something flipped a switch inside and everything started to go haywire. The physical symptoms looked like a heart problem so my wife debated between the ER and the Doctors office. We ended up going to the docs office within minutes. He checked me out and talked to me about what I was feeling and determined that it wasn't a heart issue or heart attack. To make sure he had me go in the next day for a set of lab work and a hookup to a machine with more wires than I've ever seen. The end result was that I had a good ticker but had high cholesterol.
On the follow up visit later in the week he determined I had anxiety/stress and prescribed Xanex in two week shots. It's the smallest dose he could prescribe. After I took the stuff I was bangin on all 8 cylinders again. Some days are better than others, some worse. I can get away with using a 2 week script for almost over a month which is good. It means I'm getting it under control on my own. Good thing is the coworker is gone now.
As for blood pressure I've noticed I can control it by prayer/meditation. I just close my eyes, slow my breathing, focus on one point and say one word slowly over and over. A good hot decaffeinated tea works also.

03, I have completely weaned off my Lexapro. Had a rough couple of weeks these past weeks, but levels have evened out and so far so good. Had a bad bad bout yesterday though, but a low dose Xanax did the trick. I'd rather take Xanax rarely than Lexapro daily. I am proud of myself! I hope I continue to control it like this.

Good for you! I myself do not like taking daily meds. i dont care to take meds daily either, but i take a water pill each morning, plus my high blood pressure pill and my xanex in the morning.. now my son and husband make me take one for lunch so i'll quit screaming orders at them.. as my son says.. 'mom did you take your chezzzzzzzzzzz' ?? and thats an inside joke cause he told my husband one day 'do you think we can slip mom her meds in a piece of cheese like we do the dogs meds?'.. so now its called my chezzzzzzz (cheese).. i take my chezzzzzzzzz so i dont run them off.. and i'm all good... ;D yeah xanex works..
