Garwood resident, baseball legend, Ross M. Davis, known as Satch Davis in his playing days died early New Years Day in the Houston VA Hospital. He was 94. Satch played in the Negro Leagues from 1940 to 1947, except for a 2 year hitch in the Army medical corps where he earned a "bronze star" in the south pacific. He was given the nick-name from the "great one" himself, Satchel Paige when he played for the Satchel paige All-stars. Satch Davis was noted for his bullet-like fast ball. Satch will be buried at St. Marys in Nada next Wednesday.
Davis moved to Garwood in 2005 and lived quietly in a small apartment behind my house with his faithful dog "Dottie".
For more information on Ross Satch Davis, all you have to do is GOOGLE his name and pick one of the 2,500,000 hits or check him out on Wikipedia.
Imagine my surprise one day when I answered the phone and this voice said, "Hi, you must be Mike, this is Buck O'neal, can you get Ross for me?" WOW
