The International Building Code which governs the construction of new homes, commercial businesses, apartments, and other habitabl buildings met last month and has made changes that will affect new home construction beginning in January 2011. According to the new code, all new homes will be required to have installed in them, sprinkler systems -- you know the ones you see in most businesses with the heat sensitive emitters that spray water to drown fires. The regs say these sprinklers must be installed in all habitable rooms to meet fire codes. For more information, contact your local building code office.
We wanted to put off building a new home down here in Bay City area until after the economy improves but because of the added costs for installation of the fire supression systems, we are having our new home built before the building code requirements go into effect.
IMO putting fire suppression sprinkler systems into homes makes new home ownership even more expensive than it already is, appears to be another gimmick forced onto us by the insurance industry that looks to protect its bottomline, and forces home owners to carry more costly contents insurance coverage to protect belongings, appliances, electronics, etc that mate be ruined in such sprinkler systems go off.
