...its always a good idea, when backpacking in wilderness to carry some kind of weapon for self protection, providing of course its close at hand. A pistol, a knife, box cutters, even a handy ice pick can be devasting. Knowing the habits of potential predators is also important. Big bears (grizzlies, blacks, browns) aren't choosey about method of attack -- head on, from sides, or from behind. Mountain cats (aka puma, cougar) prefer to attack from back or side, deceptively, keying in on the neck and spine ..sez experts.. With bears, you usually see and/or hear them before attack. With cats, you seldom do as they are more of an ambush predator.
A few years ago, a mountain bicycler was killed in California, not far from a city, by a cougar. A couple of days later, another was attacked nearby but managed to survive because of companions were nearby, who fought off cat, forcing it to release the woman's grip on back of head and neck. Woman survived. Authorities hunted down cat, killing it close distance from first human kill.
Having a weapon is important ..BUT.. keeping head on a swivel, staying cognisant of your surroundings, using your senses, watching for signs of predator presence (tracks, tree clawings, proxmity of normal prey animals, even happening upon a recent kill, etc) are reasons to be especially alert.
Best defense against predators comes with numbers. Going it alone in the wilds is tantamount to suicide, whether attacked by predators or dealing with accidents or injuries. There is safety in numbers...
