Deer Season, that is.
The one weekend of the season when too many drunks stay up all night playing poker and headout to the blinds in the wee hours. From my experience, being around all the big game, trophy hunters, most of the game is shot the day before the season than on opening morning which is why I never go out opening weekend. Besides down on my place, the hunting always gets better after opening day when all the gunshy bucks, yearlings, does head for more peaceful haunts.
Othe rthan personal preferences, I still like hearing your hunting stories & what you got since if you don't kill them during the course of the season 45-55% will either starve due to the drought or become roadkill on Texas roads.

My son got an 8-pointer early Sunday morning on the way home from deer camp. Hit it with his Jeep Cherokee. That's gonna be some mitey expensive venison. $1863 damage for 54-lbs of meat (processed it Monday - big chunk is destined for sausage as it was already tenderized). Good thing, DPS officer said he didn't have to use a deer tag.

My daughter got her early Christmas present last Saturday. Her Husband gave her an Elk hunt. Weighed just under 1000 lbs. I don't know what dressed weight is. She said it scored 327 in Boone & Crockett. Will find out more when they come for Christmas.

This family really enjoys the outdoors and enjoying the food nature can provide. Grandson (16) is just as avid as they are. Grandaughter (14) does hunt too, but is more into girlie-girl things at this time. They do eat all they kill; plus distribute some to Family and Friends. We will be having Elk steaks tonight.
They live on Lake Tawakoni and hunt and fish whenever possible. Duck, turkey, Deer even Bear. Son-in-law got a bear hunt in Main last year and shot a female Black Bear a little over 5'. They are down for the holidays and are out on a guided Goose hunt as I write this.
They also do their own taxidermy and some for friends. They are in the process of making a rug of the Bear skin.

They only shot one goose each and did not have very many chances. not very good conditions as the morning broke clear and bright
They did enjoy the hunt but were slightly disappointed in their guide.

Opens Saturday ... closes Saturday after the first in most places
I got one couple days back near one of the troughs on my 40acres, whitetail buck! Spike with Winchester Lever-action .243. Mite-a gotten more meat if'n i'd shot my neighbor's German Shepherd that was running after my yardbirds when came home the other day from work. An' ya-kno, I mite yet since this mornin' I found the feathers of a Quinea in the same area of other day. Twern't coyotes or ferel cat as mangled carcass was chewed up not devoured. If'n do, buzzard bait he'll be, as too old 'n too tough for tablefare.
Back to deer, my 12 yr old nephew killed his first deer yesterdy south of Uvalde: 8 pt @ 150 yards with 30-06, heartshot. Way-ta-go!
