For clarification: stake (same pronunciation as steak) refers to the object driven into the ground on a const. site or to support something like a tomato plant

Fishing was horrible at Matagorda today. I didn't even catch a buzz. waste of time -- too much freshwater! lowers the salinity (salt content), forces fish in deeper waters (where salt content greater) -- salt being heavier sinks, freshwater is at surface. fishing in Gulf will be better if you stay away from the (inlet) passes (where freshwater deltas out from shorelines) but then with the high wind, its liable to be too rough for everything except bottom fishing with dead baits (that in all likelihood with 65-deg. water will be abundant in hermit crabs & some of the shore crabs like speckle-crabs & stone crabs.

That's what I figured Ogeezer-too much fresh water from all the recent rain. I rigged up for bottom, but still nothing. It was fun anyways. Want to go again soon. Just maybe to the bay next time.

Ever wondered how much fish or seafood you needed to make a decent meal for family or when having over guests?
Well here's a chart, we found years ago, that works better than most for determining average serving sizes (adjust to meet your own) -- by item & description ----- per person serving size:
clams, in the shell ----- 6 to 8 items Clams, soft shell ----- 12 to 20 items Round fish, whole ----- 12 ounces Flounder or sole, whole ----- 20 ounces Fish, pan dressed ----- 8 ounces Fish steaks, bone in ----- 8 ounces Fish steaks, no bone ----- 5 to 6 ounces Fish fillets ----- 4 to 6 ounces Mussels in the shell ----- 2 pounds Oysters in the shell ----- 6 to 8 items Oysters, shucked ----- 1/2 pint Scallops, shucked ----- 5 ounces Shrimp, headless ----- 6 to 8 ounces Shrimp, peeled and deveined ----- 4 to 5 ounces

Starting to warm up & rain severity has diminished, so if youre like me 'n thinking bout doing some fishing, here's the fishing report for the Matagorda area:
EAST MATAGORDA: Trout are fair along the shorelines on gold spoons and topwaters. Redfish are fair to good in the grass on pumpkinseed and plum Trout Killers, Hogies and Sand Eels. Flounder are good for giggers on the south shoreline.
MATAGORDA: Trout are fair on the south shoreline on topwaters and red shad, morning glory and pumpkinseed/chartreuse Bass Assassins, Stanley Wedgetails, Trout Killers and Norton Sand Eels. Redfish are fair to good on live shrimp under a popping cork around Shell Island and in Oyster Lake.
