I can only speak for myself .. I have an exercycle, I pulled it out of the corner and have it next to my computer desk... I practically trip over it moving from the puter to anywhere else.. I'm up to 20 miles a day.. that's 80 minutes with the 75-78 revs per min. I'm trying to figure out how to get the lap top up to my hands level when I'm on the cycle.. then I can do the crosswords and such and pedal till the cow come home.. Exercise is addictive.. and I'm grooving on the addiction..
I don't know how cycling would affect your knees... it may be that swimming or something in the water may be your only doable exercise... making oatmeal or peanut butter cookies have been proven to increase the muscle strengths in your hands and wrists according to most experts..
Here's an afterthought... It's awfully boring just pedalling on my exercycle. Listening to the radio and watching tv with the sound off while hearing the scanner keeps me entertained, but I'd like to be pedaling and have hands on access to my laptop... or have some targets to shoot at with my pistol... thinking about getting another pellet pistol and some targets ... or a blowgun wih darts... crossbow.. that would make it fun ... shoot targets and pedal
that one sort of fits one of my original fantasy's... combo golf course and target range... when you walk or drive from hole to hole along the way you get a variety of pop ups you can shoot with your weapon of choice...

Have you tried the Tony Little Gazelle? Very low impact because you swing... www.tonylittle.com/detail.aspx?ID=140you can find these probably on craigslist.com or someone might have one that they are hanging clothes on....find them much cheaper than what's priced in the link.

I'm up to 25 miles a day on my stationary exercycle... if I had a Beer Stubemobile like the picture above I could sip and pedal my way over to El Campo and Back... will go up to 30 soon..
seriously, wouldn't that be a fun thing to do... get a bunch of crazy people to pedal around from area bar to area bar... pedal over to Egypt, .. pedal over to New Taiton... pick up bums along the way and give them free beer just because they can pedal... ah.. the simple life..
Wait wait! that's it! A mobile Cyber Bar..

I would try the swimming pool. It will be easier on your knees. There is a hot tub there also to warm up your joints. I know it used to open at 6 AM and there are a few adults that go exercise then to avoid the kids.

I have taken water aerobics classes and it's not as strenuous on the joints. It's probably the best exercise for someone that has knee problems.

I'll be finding even more time to spend on the exercycle... moved it behind my computer desk, and mounted the lap top on an empty Modelo box.. just the right height to be able to pump and surf... According to what I just heard on the radio, the best time to exercise is late afternoon.. not me, I like to do it early in the morning... I'll do 25 miles before Rachael finishes cooking her featured dish..

Just realised, I could do more on the exercycle if my butt didn't get so sore... think I'll look for a tractor style seat... I do 25 to 35 miles a day.. and each session is limited to how long I can stand the pain (in the you-know-where)..

Seems like about the only exercise I get these days is jumping to conclusions, running around in circles, and climbing the walls. I need to do better.

I too ride the exercycle every other day. I don't check the miles, just the time. I normally do 20 minutes but I've kicked it up to 30 and now I'm at 40 minutes all at a speed between 20 and 23 mph. I also have an ab lounger and that really works wonders for your tummy. Mine has gotten to the point that it can now hold massive amounts of pizza, beer, KFC, enchiladas, beans, rice and chocolate Blue Bell. I do 36 reps of flys and curls. I only take one vitamin, Viagra. That helps build strong bones.
