Additional smilies and emoticons for forum use can be found here and here and used instead of the ones listed above. Have fun with them.

I read an article in the paper today that said the smiley emoticon programs can add lots of spyware to your computer.

Yeah, I think that's if you download them for like msn messenger or yahoo messenger, right? Or does it also include forum smilies? I did think about that, but didn't know it would include forum smilies since you are linking from one site. ? Interesting..

Linking forum smilies is safe. Basically, what happens with them is that someone else is hosting the image, much like your avatars, and you are providing the code to link to that image for it to be properly displayed. If wanted you could link the smilies from WCNet into this forum and vice versa. I don't recommend linking WCNet forum smilies in here though because of the bandwidth issues on WCNet's end. The smilie providers I've listed above actually take that into account on their end and don't mind providing the smilies as a service for the world wide web community.
The smiley program that josiegirl mentions is actually a program you have to install on your personal computer and does add spyware and such to your individual computer as a result. I don't use it myself for that reason and have had to clean more than several friends computers lately because of it. It's actually a very funky little program that's not recommended from my end of things either.
That being said the images we link here are safe.

The program I was talking about is used to spicy up emails mostly. And yes it does have to be downloaded to your computer as I understand it. I know I get quite a few emails that have these really cute smileys in them. Sure glad I've not given in and downloaded it. lol
