The front page of the Victoria Advocate today had Roger Benevidez featured and his story made me both sad and mad. He suffered in the VietNam war but he also suffered as a Mexican American poor youth and again as a citizen of El Campo. No one locally would step-up to see that he was recognized for his acts of courage during his Nam experience. Shame on the guilty parties. READ THE STORY!
Only the Barbee family strived to see that this man, this warrior, this HERO would be honored as he deserved to be. His race should have had no bearing on if or when he was honored. I met Sgt. Benevidez when we moved to El Campo and I was impressed with his humility and sincerity. He had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and was mentoring school students and easily spoke to any civic group wanting him. Want to know his actions that deserved our nation's highest honor for a soldier.- look it up on google or read the Victoria Advocate. Audie Murphy earned his medal as did Sgt. Roy. A school in Houston was named after Sgt. Roy - why not El Campo?
I think the family deserves some sort of apology.
