The recent article in our local paper about the possibility of a big tax increase to cover the drop in mineral royalties and much lower sales tax revenues should be a wakening call to our citizens. You were warned about the over-spending by Ms. Harris at a recent council meeting yet no one did anything. Does anyone understand that the city is running out of money?
We have just too many plans for spending - no control for Ms. Snyder. We have promised the State of Texas that we would contribute to the bypass from Hwy 71 S to the 59 business road - not needed now. We have committed to the removal of the bridge on FM 1160 and rebuilding Freeway 59 over that road - not needed either. We have planned to build a exit/entrance for the Prasek business - they are not even in the city limits and pay no sales taxes - no one dares to give the reasons for such a generous deal. Does it help EC?
The work on the Norris Street project will be delayed a couple of years since the city doesn't have the money to complete the job. See - the money needs to go to the new city services building. The bid for the building was $8.5 million yet the stupid citizens approved a $10 million bond. That's like giving a car dealer $35,000 on a car selling for $30,000 - makes no sense. When will Ms. Snyder finish the sidewalks on Mechanic and Jackson streets? Another question for you taxpayers - just how many police cars does EC need? Count them at the city hall. And the extra services vehicles - even the second assistant EMS director drive a city vehicle.
But lets think about current needs. With all the rain and flooding of our streets recently - who pays for the repair of the pot holes? The new Norris street didn't fair too well with flooding either. Isn't the same company trying to rebuild the bridge on South Mechanic? Sometimes you have to get references before you take the lowest bid on public construction. By the way just how long was the original bid for construction? Why did the company working on the bridge get the expensive contract for Norris street? Lots of questions - just one problem.
Stopping the uncontrolled spending could be a quick solution but a better long term would be to say good-bye.
