I am so TIRED of hearing about this in church. It's about raising money for the Diocese of Victoria. The tow churches I go to have been talking about it at the homily ever since it came about. Last Sunday, I went to church and didn't see out normal priest and it was a sub-priest. And then when it came time for the homily..here came our normal priest just dressed in his black outfit and the WHOLE time talked about this capital campaign for the Diocese of Victoria. WHO ELSE IT HEARING THIS SAME STUFF??

The Catholic Church has some rather large lawsuits to pay off as a result of shuffling pedophile priests from pillar to post. You should suggest they sell part of their hoard of treasures locked away in the Vatacin to pay the debts of the people whose decision it was to allow the ped priests to continue abusing children. I don't see where it's the responsibility of the same group of people whose children were molested to foot the bill.

they could have stopped this long before it got out of hand... one of my Catholic Hating family members used to talk about the activity of the Priests and the Alter Boys... we all thought she was nuts.. turned out it was a common occurrance.. and she was right about what she was saying... shocker..

This capital campaign for the Diocese of Victoria wants my parents to pay some money to them...they put this example pay off chart on the envelope...and believe it or not the lowest amount to pay off in 5 years as one of their examples was $2,500.00 and my mom said that is CRAP BECAUSE THEY JUST NEED TO MONEY TO PAY OFF THEIR FREAKIN LAWYERS..she doesnt want to give anything and i agree. also my mom said if she goes to church next week and they talk about that capital campaign for the Diocese of Victoria in the homily instead of what the reading is about..she is going to get up and walk out. This has been going on for about a month and everyone is SICK of hearing about it. thats terrible that the Diocese of Victoria wants us to listen abuot how badly they need money instead of how we need to pray for others and maybe why dont we just pray for their stupid acts instead of giving.

I would say when it gets to the point that my church is insisting I pay for their mistakes it's time to find another place to worship. My religion preaches accountability and answering to ones mistakes. Given that we use the same Bible as your above mentioned church it's safe to say that same accountability applies to even them regardless of the robes they wear or the prayers they chant come Sunday morning.

Missy, I think all the parishes in the Victoria diocese are doing this. A LOT of people don't like it...including me! You know, we already give to the DSA and now this. We even had someone from our parish call us to remind us about "pledge" Sunday. It went in one ear and flew out the other...lol! Some people have said they were just going to give a small one time sum...none of that pay a certain amount per month for 5 years.
The money being raised is not for lawsuits/mistakes. It's going to be used to expand the spiritual renewal center in Victoria, religious education, catholic schools, priests pension fund and a portion goes back to the parishes/missions. All this to a sum of $9 million!

Dunno stargazer. It's not just happening in the Victoria area not even just in Texas. I've heard from Catholic friends from Bay City to Alabama about the demands The Church is making of them financially. Most are uncomfortable with the pressure while others, like yourself, are turning a deaf ear. The unfortunate aspect is that the most povertous are the ones that are most likely to give until it hurts. My issue is that they are giving to one of the wealthiest entities on the planet.
Regardless of what they are raising money for I feel that they need to take property they own and sell it to further their cause(s). I worked in the Victoria and Halletsville areas years ago leasing for an oil company. You wouldn't believe the acreage and oil rights devoted Catholic Church members gave to the church. Please note, it was a huge disappointment to find some of this acreage in any prospect I was putting together. At least at that time it was extraordinarilly difficult to lease from the church.

I've NEVER heard of the church helping anyone/families locally. They'd rather send the money to South or Latin America and help those over there!

I believe their most recent efforts to accumulate fundage has to do with the multimillion dollar payouts they are making to victims of priest abuse. My stance is that the hierarchy of the Church determined that shuffling ped priests from town to town was acceptable and now that they've admitted guilt via the lawsuit payoffs it's their responsibility to come up with the $. Demanding payment from the same group of people their priest shuffling policies hurt should not make any sense to anyone at any level.
Look at what population is most easily coerced by the church and you'll find the most uneducated, povertous of the churches membership. How "Christian" is it to put the financial aspect of the ped priest debacle on them?

My Dear My name is Rev Father John Peter; I am 76 years old now. I have been suffering in the sick bed for the past 7 years. Now I believe that my time has come to join my ancestors in heaven.
I got your email address from the Internet, as the spirit of Almighty God directed me to contact you for this charity work. I have $10,000,000.00 deposited in a safe location, which I want you to claim on my behalf for an important charitable project. Can you honestly do this for me?
Remain bless in the Lord. Rev John Peter __________________________________________________

That email targets the same demographic the church is targeting with their questionable fundraising practices, the ignorant poor.
