Is this a sign that El Campo is growing or what? Let's see - 74 new housing units for a cost of $135,000 each. That is not low-rent housing but guess for whom it will be built? They can not put such valuable property in a low-income area so what land do they buy?
First solution - buy the 19+ acres behing Northside & Myatt Elem. schools. The school isn't going to use that land as evidenced by them moving out of town to build a new school. Plus the money for the sale would really help hire some teachers back and fund more football expenses - maybe covered fan area.
The paper article said that financial breaks could be given to the development to assist - lower taxes - lower utilities - subsidized rents. Sounds better all the time. Why not lower my taxes? There are some landlords in the town that own 30 - 40 - 60 homes and provide good homes. Why not lower their taxes?
But this question - in this time of financial hardship - what government is doing the financing - China - Iraq - Columbia? It can't be our own! OK - here it comes from a person who is tired of this stuff. Why do we keep spending to put up nice housing for people who don't know how to take care of their blessings. Look at the projects - we have to spend tax money to clean up their yards, move their junk cars, provide bus service, extra police protection and in most cases - they don't pay rent like they should.
One more gripe - when the homes were build at the old EC hospital site - no local firms were used. No electricians, no A/C workers, no plumbers and no suppliers. This is just wrong!
I know it's Christmas and I will donate money to make sure kids get something. They deserve it but the parents- I just don't know. Bah humbug to you liberals who want to take care of the world and send me the bill!
