The 2009 National Fencing Championships are being held July 3-12 in Grapevine, TX at the Gaylord Hotel. Fencers from our area are members of the Gulf Coast Division of the United States Fencing Association. As the USFA makes results available (roughly 12-36 hours after an event, to ensure accuracy), I will try to post and update the results here: Gulf Coast Division Results

You root for whomever you like. Some cheer by club, by state or division or city...
On Friday, the Junior (under 19) Women's Epee event is held. The final was between a young woman from Amarillo (at left) and a young woman recently moved to NYC from The Woodlands (between Houston and Conroe).
Here is the last of the event. By this point the score is 10-8 (the young lady from Amarillo is in the lead) and they are getting tired. They fence to the first to score 15 touches with the tip of the weapon on any part of their opponent's body.
A bright red light on the top left of the scorebox indicates a touch made by the fencer on the left (Miss Nusz of Amarillo). A bright green light on the top right of the scorebox indicates a touch made by the fencer on the right (Miss Brandfield-Harvey formerly of the Woodlands). The Junior Women's Epee event was made up of 97 competitors from across the country. The final eight get medals.

I've always thought that was a cool sport. Not sure if I could do it, but think it would be fun to try...
