The windmill, itself, is one of the most significant inventions in American history. It is said that it had more to do with settling the West than the gun itself! Because of the windmill early pioneers and homesteaders were able to bring forth water from a land where it was scarcely flowing in rivers and streams: a land once known as the Great American Desert. Windmills meant life. They meant life for the pioneers, the livestock and the crops that nourished them. Prior to the advent of electricity, harnessing the wind was the only way to pull water from the ground. Still used today, windmills play an important part in many remote areas. Their value is priceless and their nostalgia is timeless. At one time there were over 300 windmill manufacturers but now only a few remain. The most photographed invention of all time the windmill and its romanticism will go on for eternity.
One of the oldest, best known names in windmills is Aermotor, which is still in business, having recently expanded its facilities in San Angelo, Texas to include a 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility.
To learn more about Aermotor windmills, go here: www.aermotorwindmill.com/
On our place, we have the 14' diameter, E-model with the capacity to raise water 460' from subsurface water table. Utilizing a 2" cylinder with an adjustable 9.5 to 13.5" stroke in a 15mph wind, we're producing about 160 gallons per hour worth of water, which is sufficient for most of our needs on the old homestead.
In today's dollars, a windmill like ours will FOB you about $9,000 (excluding shipping) for the 1735 pound system (excluding the tower). Well drilling and installation of tower + windmill are extra.
If you're interested in putting a windmill on your place that uses no electricity, then by all means check our the Aemotor Windmill site to discover which model best fits your needs and pocketbooks by checking out the Q&A section.
And if you want one or need an existing windmill repaired or upgraded, be sure to call my old friend Bob McCarn in Port Lavaca, via these resources:
