How do I get rid of poison ivy without killing the tree it's growing on?

Clip the main stem where it goes down into the ground to cutoff its water supply & nutrient pickup from the soil BUT doing this wont stop it from trying to send up another runner which as soon as appears must be cutoff as well. In time (several years) you should be able to eliminate its presence.
While a herbicide like Roundup or Eraser does cause ill effects to leaves and tender branches that the defoliate touches, if the tree is large enuff, the chemical will not kill it while onotherhand the poison oak, ivy, sumac plant will be terminated.
