Annual Elks event gives free-throw participants aged 8-13 (age determined as of Apr. 1, '08) the opportunity to advance to district; state; a 4-state regional; and national competition in Springfield, Mass. . There is no entry fee and youngsters may register at the site of the local contest (El Campo High School Gym) at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the competition (SAT., JAN. 12, '08). Boys and girls compete separately in three different age categories---8-9; 10-11; 12-13. All 8-9 year olds (boys and girls) shoot from 4 ft. in front of the regulation free throw line and use the smaller sized (girls regulation) basketball. All others shoot from the regulation free throw line, girls using their same aforementioned ball, and boys using the boys regulation-sized ball. Rubber-soled shoes compatible with the wooden gym floor are required, however, no other type clothing is otherwise specified. Participants typically wear jeans/t-shirts or shorts/sports jerseys. Warmups may be the item of choice if the weather is extremely cold (which it sometimes is at that time of year). This competition is open to all area youngsters and is not restricted to one particular town or another. All competition past the local contest will be handled at the Elks' expense including food, lodging and travel. It is a best of 25 format, with shooters shooting 10 (with up to 5 warmup shots) and then 15 (no warmup for this round). Tiebreakers (if necessary) will be series of 5 free throws until tie is broken. Any questions, call 979-543-6675.
