I enjoy the do-it-yourself, renovation, decoration shows on the tube these days. There's something really gratifying about watching someone else work their arse off to turn something ugly into a thing of beauty (if the owner's lucky).
I believe that watching the shows has made a difference in my existence. I no longer buy "junk" and I'm constantly, piece, by piece, ridding myself of junk.
Since I consider myself "normal" I figure I'm not the only person that's been affected by some of the organizational, renovation, yada, yada shows on the tube. I'd be interested to know if anyone else here has redecorated, organized, purged junk or some such in response to watching tv.

we sure did. watching all those trading spaces and design on a dime and such, we took some old furniture that was in storage and sanded it down, painted it, and put new knobs on it for when the little rugrat got here on 10/04/05. never would have considered doing that before.
before that, my daughter said to paint the dining room red. i thought she was nuts. however after seeing all these shows and some of the decorators went a little wild, i figured if i didn't like the color i could just repaint. well, the dining room was painted red with country white trim, and it it the most beautiful room in my house. except for the carpet where someone spilled red paint all over it. other than that, it is beautiful.
i love those shows.

We have remodeled our entire house. Our most recent project was our master bathroom and bedroom. We gutted our nasty hot pink bathroom and put in travertine tile, a garden tub, built a shower and tiled it, bought an antique table and put bowl sinks on top, etc. We also built a huge walk in closet. I've got tons of clothes so I'm in heaven. Watching those shows made us realize that it really isn't that difficult and doing it youself saves you money and makes you feel good when you step back and look at the final product.

You are so brave!!!! I've only seen a couple of bathroom redo's on the tube and I figure that's because they're the hardest. The kitchen appears to be the #2 hardest room to do. I've got two bathrooms I'd like to redo and so far I haven't been able to muster the fortitude to do one.
Did you hire a plumber to help you or did you and your husband handle all of the plumbing as well? I'd like to tear out a wall and a bathtub, put in a shower and replace part of the wall with glass brick....but I'm scared.

We hired a plumber. That's definately one job that we couldn't have done by ourselves. The worst part was actually the demo. It doesn't look like that much tile until you rip it out and it is everywhere. It also sucked only having one bathroom for a month, but it was well worth it. Our bathroom went from looking like an exploding bottle of peptobismol (sp?) to looking like a spa.

We have decide after it took us several days to declutter our small little house that if we buy anything new for the house, something old has to go out. That probably explains why we havent been buying anything for a while.
