We want to buy the grandson another handheld type game player device for his BD. They have a PS2 and one GBA in the house already. I assume that the PSP has it's own games and nothing else would work with it. Is that called backward compatible? Since his brother has a GBA that would increase the games they have access to but we are not into games/devices and know little to nothing. Any advice on this? Will most likely end up with the wrong thing but we are used to that too.

A PSP, or PlayStation Portable, uses a different game format than the GameBoy Advance. PlayStation Portable actually uses small cd's for their games. The GameBoy advance uses a cartridge type format for their games. A PSP game will not work in a GameBoy Advance and vic versa.
A PlayStation Portable will do several things that the GameBoy Advance cannot do. The PSP can go on the internet via a wireless connection. It can also be used to view movies that are on a special, smaller DVD. It can also be used as an MP3 player.
My advice is if there is already a GameBoy Advance in the house another is what you would most likely need to get. The GameBoy Advance has the ability to link to another GameBoy Advance and play games with each other. I'm not certain how it works but that is possible. Also with an existing GBA in the household another GBA can use the games that are already owned. If you were to purchase the PSP you would need to purchase new games and they would not be able to be played on the GBA system.
One important thing to remember about the PSP is that you cannot play PS2 games of a PSP. The format and size are different.

Ok so we got neither. Looked into all and asked a million questions. Got him a Nintendo DS. Supposed to do all sorts of things and goes wifi or something too. Will play the GBA as well as the Nintendo DS games. He has had it for a week and his mom said he never puts it down unless they make him. Got up at 3 am to play with it. She said they charge it in their room so he can't get up and play in the middle of the night without them knowing.
