Compaq Presario 5330US 5000 series.... I downloaded system updates today and after it was done I restarted my computer to find a new error "1720-SMART drive detects imminent failure. Att failed: #07. I tried to load, took forever...so I restarted, did a "Go Back" before installing the system updates (windows xp) and everything seems fine, no error.... I'm confused. So...does this mean I'm going to need a new hard drive soon? If so, what exactly do I look for? Also... was going to upgrade memory one day a while back and was in best buy. I asked them what I needed and they told me that the computer I have does not allow upgrades in memory? Im sure you can add memory to this pc....anybody else familiar or can help out? Thanks

Updates from where? Microsoft? Compaq?
SMART is a diagnostic program.
To start with, read: (Edited here)http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph05701&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&tool=solveCategory&product=93221&query=5330US&rule=40522&dest_page=solveCategory
On the HP site query "5330US smart 1720". There is a WD calibration table update you may want to check to see if it's applicable to machine / drive.
Also there are some other SMART updates, but they seem to apply to notebooks and attribute 5.
Check them out. Try the Live Chat in support. It helps to compose your info in Notepad first, then cut and paste once you have a live body on line. Things like system description, error codes, updates, etc.
You can also start shopping for a new drive and back up critical data . . .

Hmmm. Week and a half and still posting. Something must have worked or got a new machine. Guess we'll never know.

Glad to hear it's working. On a board like this, it doesn't do much good to take the time to try to help a sick computer if we don't know if the suggested cure worked. Somebody else may have the same problem later, and it's either do the research again or ignore them. Watch out for anything strange it may start doing.
