I have spent all day cleaning my sons computer...
last night he clicked on a link someone sent him on MSN messanger.... which then stated mass messageing itself to everyone on his list...... trojan LowZone.... had to shut the puter off reboot shutting off msn messanger update Norton. run a scan.
it picked up nothing .....
so today i dumped norton. deleted MSN messanger... bought Defender Pro from walmart...... the 15-1 disc..... so far so good... i'm downloading all updates.... (which is takin forever)... downloaded all 15 programs.... and when the 2 hours of microsoft updates finish i'm going to redownload Msn messanger and keep my fingers crossed it all worked.
norton didnt even pick up the trojan..... this program pick up and cleaned 3 viruses/ trojans.... so far i'm impressed.... (cheaper too)
but still have to see what MSN messanger is going to do.....
my other problem is... my son in abilene now has it too.. but his is mass producing itself to the tune of 10 viruses/trojans.... and i gotta get him fixed being so far away.... he said its multiplying itself....

Did you try just turning Messenger off (right click the icon on the bottom of screen)? Not sure if you have a virus / trojan or not. It sounds like the computer did exactly what it was told to do when he clicked the link, and that's why Norton doesn't pick it up. Computers do what you tell them to do, not neccesarily what you want them to do. Note- MSN (msn.com) and the instant messenger program are separate entities. Any IM program (of the dozens available) would have done the same thing. Keep us informed.

it wouldnt let me turn it off.... i couldnt close the chat windows fast enough... within seconds there were 28 chat boxes open and i was clicking and clicking to close them off but it was just too fast at opening more.. i tried to close out messenger but i couldnt.... i had to just push the button to turn the puter off.... reboot and not let messenger load, then updated virus protection and scan.... it sent itself to my son in abilene who now has it and cant get rid of it... but i think my brother is going to fix his today by remote access......
we reloaded MSN messenger and so far the mechine is clean...and working fine... xx (those are my fingers crossed...

From your description, I guess that nothing was submitted to Symantec. I don't know if 'System Restore' would make sure it was out of the registry or not.
Hmmm... Knew there was reason I never got into IM.
Hope someone else on the forum can help. Good luck.
