I use Firefox with the AdBlocker extension. It tends to block most ads including the banner ads and flash ads. I normally use Noton's Internet Security with the add blocker as well. It seems no matter what you try though some always gets through. You might try AdAware to do periodic checks and remove what you have.

www.lavasoft.de/click on products, second from the bottom of the menu (Ad-Aware SE Personal) Personal vers 1.06 there is a difference between AD-AWARE and Adware, be most careful, AD-AWARE is what you want from lavasoft.

I have AdAware, Spybot, and MSN Windows Defender. Somehow my hubby God bless him went who knows where and must have gotten some Spyware on my computer. I had always run Defender daily and it suddenly showed up that it had found something....wanted to know what I wanted it to do....I said fix it. It did something and from that time on my Defender will only scan up to a certain point and then freeze up. I've tried to run Spybot and AdAware but they now do the exact same thing....freeze up after a short time scanning. They all always ran fine before and found stuff that I deleted and all was well. Not well now as I am sure I have some type of bad Spyware on here but can't even run a scan to find it. Anyone ever have this happen and any idea of how to fix it short of taking the computer in to be professionally cleaned like I had to once before when we got a virus from his surfing.
Other than not being able to run scans of any type anymore the computer seems to run okay.
And yes he is now officially ban from my computer. He can only use his and if he messes it up he can fix it. HA HA.

Depending on how long it has been you may be able to use the Windows Restore feature to get rid of it. The only drawback is that you will uninstall anything that you have installed since the event. There may be someone else here that knows mroe about the ins and outs of how it works and better explain it than I.

Josiegirl- When you say that it freezes while scanning, how long have you tried waiting? 30 minutes to an hour? Could also be your firewall blocking update to the program, so nothing happens.

Mad Scientist I've waited up to 4 hours and I have DSL. It had been scanning perfect everyday for months and so I don't think it's the firewall. But who knows. It scans about 1/3 of the files and then bang....like it hits a brick wall. lol

Josie, hit control, alt, delete all at the same time to bring up Windows Task Manager. Click on the file that says "Processes" This tells you everything that is running on your computer and how much each feature is using processor wise. What I did was write all these processes down, then went to this site www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm On that site is pretty much every process that can be run on a system, alphabetized, with a description of where it's coming from, if it's spyware/adware, and recommendations on what to do with it. Very informative! Also, if you think you've found out what is causing the problem then do a google search on "whatever_filename_it_is.exe removal" (for example, one spyware/adware is called "save.exe" so you'd do a search on "save.exe removal" and if it brings up a way to remove it you will find it. A friend of mine's laptop had something on it and when she fixed it all it did was mess more up, ultimatley had to be taken to a computer specialist and wiped clean.

I guess this is a mote issue since last night sometype of something popped up and it's a spyware program called Spy Sheriff. I'm off to take the computer in to have it worked on by someone who knows how to deal with it. It's beyone me.
Thanks for the info Grillmaster. I'll bookmark that page when I get my computer back. Don't think my daughter wants me to bookmark her computer and it sure wouldn't do me any good there. lol

We never heard back on how you came out. Have you tried running your adware killers in SAFE mode?

Sorry but I just got my computer back yesterday. They took tons of Spyware off of it and a bunch of viruses too. I now have Norton back on and working and all my spyware detectors are up and running too. Apparently one of the virus programs changed some of the settings on the computer and caused the programs that were suppose to look for them to not work.
Thanks so much for asking how I came out.

Glad to hear that you are up and running again. You have all the tools needed to keep your machine healthy - all it takes is practice and to do a little homework. Google is your friend. Make sure you use the Immunize feature of Spybot. Also, now that it is (was?) a clean machine, do what grillmaster suggested and keep track of what's running. If something new shows up, there's a reason - you put it there, intentionally or not.
