networker, did the wife plant the two different varieties close together?? if so they will cross pollinate.. mine did once.. i had squash-zinni ... seems the bees dont know to just pick on one squash variety at a time.. lol... never tried those topsy turvy mators, had a friend once who did, i think the wind tore hers up, kinda like a wind chime effect.. tomatillos dont self pollinate like mators do, so i'll need bees this year.. the lady told my hubby a tomatillo is just a wild tomato plant.. go figure that one.. and they can get 12 feet high.. jezzzzz

Has anyone tried those topsy turvey tomato plants that hang upside down? Yeap, the wife did it a few years ago and it worked great. No idea how she set it up but it worked. We haven't started a garden yet because of the boy and the fact it is still freezing here off and on.

We planted a larger garden this year due to the uncertainty of the economy and I am having a blast with it. We planted corn, carrots, turnips, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, squash, cukes, watermelon, cantalope, onions, and some stinky flowers that my wife has to have every year.

lol well....i need to know everything really. i already have my lil plot to grow a garden. now how much cultivating of the soil do i need to do? do i add anything to the soil? do i water every single day, how much water, etc., etc., etc. what times do i water? pretty much anything and everything. i tried growing tomatoes before and they just die! this year i already planted 2 tomato plants just to see and one died, but one survived but i think this last cold spell got it. i provided it a little shade with something, as my mom told me to do, which i didn't do in the beginning and is why i think the first one died. i had also grown some squash seeds inside but when my honey planted them they kind of all died as well as strawberries! im not much of a green thumb, but im determined to learn from the best (you all here)!

first of all, what kind of soil do you have?? sandy type like caney soil or the black gumbo type? tomatos need full sun. they dont like covers... you might of just lost the one cause of the frost.. they need an inch a week of water. and never ever water during high heat hours, either water early in the morning or late after the sun is off them(dusk).. it kills the leaves and turns them yellow.. they are best IMO keeped close to a fence for stability but stakes will do. i have both on mine... they need lots of calcium.. either egg shells or lime in the dirt when you till up the ground to prevent blossom end rot. or you'll end up using medicine to spray on them to prevent this. tomatoes self polinate themselves.. some blooms are males and some are females just like cucumbers do.. squash is a whole other thing, they need bees and lots of them dont ever plant two different kinds close together like i did once. jezzzzz lesson learned.. heheheee then you have cut worms to deal with, they cut the plant right at the ground level.. but they say put a cup like a styrofoam or paper cup ring around the stem when you plant and it stops them.. personally i've never done it and got cut worms several times..
