Surely, we're not the only ones with a veggie garden?
We put in the usual vegetables -- tomatoes, radishes, carrots, bell peppers, jalapenos, banana peppers, summer squash, zucchini, cantaloupes, eggplant, cucumbers, green beans, longleaf lettuce, row of sweet corn, a new one this season, Chard were started in March.
During the waxing moon of April, we'll start our sweet tatters. Then in May, our okra.
Already we're seeing some tomatoes but none are ripened...

Used to help my gpa when he has his garden it was huge...but then his health got bad and he couldnt do it any more. Since he passed away my gma hasnt wanted another garden. oh well I'll settle for maters and peppers love those too

Our artichokes are making ... squash & zucchini are in bloom ... pickling cukes are making ... cantaloupes are slowed due to all the cool weather ... eggplants have blooms ... sweet corn not quite ready to tassel ... garden cukes blooming ... tomaters greening up ... need more sunshine for the pepps (banana, bell, jalapeno) to set blooms ... carrots are filling out ... string beans are really climbing trellis ... eating romaine lettuce, bush beans, radishes, chard, 'n onions + taters planted last winter ... abundance of harvest means we'll be doing a lot of canning again this year ...
just waiting for the waxing moon (May 17 - June 1) to plant in our okra
'Round here we garden by the moon phases. Plant seeds during the waxing moon & do fertilizing & garden upkeep during the waning moon. All in all it looks like another good year, providing we don't get too much rain. Today, gonna put the fertilizer to the garden & do some serious weeding & tackle the fire ant mounds that've invaded our large, country garden.

I talked to my rose grower in California and he said they are working on the blue roses, but as of now they are more lavender than blue.

what do you use to kill the ants? Typically, I use two methods depending on where the fireants mound: - Outside the garden area or where vegetables are not growing, I use Spectricide Fireant Mound Destroyer granules that are sprinkled on the mound & watered in. It's the best thing I've found since the EPA took Dursban off the market. Happen'd on it while in Lowe's (Rosenberg) having tried other brands which had little success.
- Where veggies are making, I use a less toxic mixed solution of liquid dish detergent & water, the soapier the better. The cheapest, equally idea solution is HEB Dishwashing Liquid or something similar from a local dollar store. Once made in a garden pump sprayer, I stir up the fireants & spray it on the enraged fireants & mounds. Soaking it heavily with the agent. It kills ants, practically on contact, by clogging their spiracles (openings where they take in air to respirate - since without lungs they don't actually breathe); no intake of oxygen, they die.
I've found the best time to hit the mounds is after a rainy or cloudy day when the sun shines. Fireants move the white egg capsules near the surface of the mound to help incubate the egg. Stirring up the mound with a rake exposes the eggs, and helps wipe out the next line of hatchlings plus the fireants. Queens are seldom killed by surface saturation since soon as mounds are disturbed, these go deeper, but being that most fireant mounds have numeraous queens, some with wings ready for mating, surface saturation + heavy, deep penetration of soapy substances & light mist spraying of disturbed mounds will take its toll. Wipe out the eggs, the workers, and without support the queen(s) die. You mite have to retreat mounds again to devastate any survivors from 1st treating or to herd them out of garden area where they can be hit with the more potent fireant killer. Incidentially, if you have a problem with honeybee nests or swarms, and cannot get a beekeeper to come take care of them, providing theyre not the over agressive killer-bees, the soapy detergent will kill bees too. Don't use on wasps or hornets tho, it's not very effective, tends only anger them more.

We got ripe t'maters 'n more: artichokes, chard, fush beans, squash, zucchini, pickling cumcumber, romaine lettuce, eggplants, radishes, onions 'n string beans harvesting now.
Sweet corn is tasseling. Blossums on cantaloupes, and banana pepps. Dug the rest of our taters, this morning after planting about 40' of okra seed. Cucumbers, jalapeno, and bell peppers are coming at bit slower than expected. But so far, garden is fine & more we raise, less we have to depend on HEB, WallyWorld or Farmers market ... $$$ saved on fresh veggie offsets rising gasoline costs.

When is too late to plant? Good QUESTION. As long as it stays mild, rains come regularly, you could conceivably plant most anything that's not too heat sensitive ... okra, peppers (all kinds) tend to do real well in our Summer climate ... if you shade the plants during heat of day, cucumbers, tomatoes can still be planted OR if a Spring garden is out of your prospects, a Late Summer garden or Early Fall garden mite be in order -- for more info, go to the County Library and search Texas veggie gardening; there's a number of reliable books & periodicals to help you decide.

high temps o'er past week have done in our squash & zuccini which never really got going ... chard, cucumbers did really good tho slowing down ... pickling cukes was tremendous, put up nearly 70 pint jars ... tomaters doing good too, cept them getting too much zone ... eggplants making ... lettuce, radishes, green beans (15 qts canned) was bumper crop ... been eating sweet corn (roastin ears) regularly, even put up 12-16 quart jars ... peppers just now coming into season ... almost ready to dig some our sweet tatters ... got cantaloupe up the gazoo ... 'n okra is little over a month out of soil, seems to be doing okay
Compost heap from veggie cuttings, green manures, trimmings, dirt spreadings has really grown ... got nearly 8 cubic yards of stuff now ... and red wigglers having a feast, so much so got earthworm coccoons (encased baby wigglers) by the bucket full ... mite ought go drown a few worms (fishing) down at the river
Time to start thinkin 'bout our fall garden...
